Chandler/Frye/Shields Cemetery, Salt Creek, Monroe County, Indiana
On Saturday, June 25, 2011, a group of descendants of William and Margaret (Overshiner) Chandler got together to do much-needed repairs and the removal of years of debris at the Chandler/Frye/Sheilds Cemetery. Two descendants made the trip from Utah to help in the project.
The discovery of the day was when Nancy Jane, one of the volunteers and a great-great-great granddaughter of Nancy Jane Scott Chandler (1840-1877), walked to a stubble of a headstone and, working with a little water and a brush, discovered the gravestone of her great-great-great grandmother and namesake. Until that moment no one thought about looking at the top of what appeared to be a broken off headstone. What a find!! Below, careful scrutiny reveals "Nancy Chandler" (with the bottom of the "y" broken off) on the enhanced photo of the stone. Part of a date is also legible.

Nancy Jane Scott Chandler was the second wife of William Riley Chandler, born 1831 Indiana. His Chandler ancestry is John Chandler b 1600 ENG > Robert Chandler b c 1629 VA > Robert Chandler b 1654 VA > William Chandler b 1693 VA > Timothy Chandler b 1733 VA > William Chandler b 1769 VA > William Riley Chandler b 1798 VA (Source: CFA Lineages Database). Fifteen graves are included in a census of the cemetary which can be seen at www.ingenweb.org/inmonroe/Cemeteries/ChandlerFryeCemetery.htm. Nancy was apparently the first burial in the cemetery; husband William Riley Chandler, who lived until 1915 and married two more times, is buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Monroe County, Indiana.

Chandler Cemetery
Chatham, New Hampshire
Chandler Cemetery is located approximately halfway between Gilead, Maine, and Fryeburg, Maine, on Route 113, commonly called the Evans Notch Road. A small section slips into New Hampshire at Chatham, the location of the cemetery.
The photos were taken by Steven Chandler, a descendant of Edmund Chandler (Genetic Chandler Family 13). Steve photographed the three markers below because of the similarities to his own name, Stephen Oliver Chandler. His comment was, 'Nothing like having “the experience” before the expiration date arrives!'
Carol May of the Edmund Chandler Family Association forwarded Steve's photos with the following information: "I did a quick check into the Chandlers who were buried in that cemetery and I think that they were originally Fryeburg, Maine, Chandlers. I think it was Moses Chandler who first settled in the Fryeburg area after the Revolutionary War. Anyway, they trace back to William and Annis Chandler of Roxbury, Mass."
The view from the cemetery is of Baldface Mountain, making Chandler Cemetery a spectacular location for a final resting place. Click on the small photo of the mountain to see a larger version of Steve's beautiful photograph. This page will still be open behind the larger image.

| Green Berry Duff Chandler |
This photo of the grave of Green Berry Duff Chandler was sent by great-grandson Joe Chandler of Owassa, Oklahoma. Green Chandler is buried in Bristow City Cemetary, Bristow, Oklahoma. Joe says the family story was that Green, who lived in Kentucky, came to Oklahoma to visit his son, Joe's grandfather, and became ill and died during the visit. An 1850 census record for Clay County, Kentucky, shows Green Chandler, age 15, in the household of Joseph and Martha Chandler. In addition to Green, other children were Emina(?), age 13; Elizabeth, age 11; Silas, age 9, and Mary, age 2.
The 1860 census record for Clay County, Kentucky, has Green as head of household at age 24. With him are Betsy, age 20 (sister Elizabeth?); brother Silas, age 19; sister Mary, age 12; a female age 8 whose name looks like Lavical; and his mother Martha, age 65. Three people with the surname Radford are also in the household.
The 1880 census shows Green still in Clay County at age 44. His wife is Luisa, and they have the following children: Martha, age 17; Julian, age 15; Mary age 13; Elizabeth, age 11; William, age 5; and Eliza, age 3. By 1910 Green and his wife, spelled "Louisa" this time, are living in Laurel County, Kentucky, apparently near son William, age 37, and his family.

Joseph and Ann Chandler
Centre Friends Meeting House
Centreville, Delaware
Centreville, Delaware, a small village that has existed at least since 1750, has lots of Chandlers, most of whom are believed to be descendants of the George and Jane line, Chandler DNA Project Group 7B. Although early settlers began acquiring land in and around Centreville as early as 1680 and a Friends Centre Meeting House has existed since 1711, the year 1750 is generally accepted as the founding date for the Village of Centreville. The current Centre Friends Meeting House was built in 1796 to replace the original 1711 log structure. The cemetery at the Meeting House contains graves of several of Chris Burns' Chandler ancestors, including Joseph and Ann below. Joseph Chandler, whose grave marker is show below, was the great-great-grandson of George (d. c.1687 on a ship while traveling to America with his family) and Jane Chandler. Read about Centreville's history on the village website.

Relict and Consort Explanation— The reference "Relict" and "Consort," often found on tombstones or death notices, refers to the wife."Relict" means that the woman was a widow at the time of her death, and "consort" means that her husband survived her. “Genealogy Hints and Tips,” CFA Newsletter, June 2000. (Webmaster's note—The usage on Mary’s marker does not follow the rule cited here and also found in other sources. Mary outlived her husband by more than seven years but is referred to on the grave marker as “consort” instead of “relict,” which would have been more correct.)

Robert Bailey Chandler of Winston County, Mississippi
Robert Bailey Chandler, Donna Gorda’s great-great-grandfather, is buried in Antioch Cemetery, Winston County, Mississippi. He was the son of Robert Chandler (born 1775 Wilkes County, NC) and Margret Johnston (born November 11, 1798). Robert Chandler, born 1775, was the brother of Abraham Chandler (see above, buried Chandler Cemetery, Calhoun, Georgia), so Robert Bailey Chandler buried in Antioch Cemetery, Winston County, Mississippi, is the nephew of Abraham Chandler buried in Chandler Cemetery, Calhoun, Gordon County, Georgia.

| Spurgeon "Spud" Chandler, St. Petersburg, Florida |
Bob Chandler sent this photo of the grave site of baseball great Spurgeon "Spud" Chandler and his wife Frances in Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery in St. Petersburg, Florida. The inscriptions read "Spurgeon F. 1907 - 1990" and "Frances V. 1916 - 1999" with "Together forever" between the two names. Bob said, "Sadly, I found that before he died he lived in the city of South Pasadena, just outside St. Pete, when I was a young Deputy Sheriff working there. I'll bet he would have had a lot of great stories." See more about Spud's career and Chandler lineage here.

| W. O. B. Chandler, Stoneburg, Texas |
 | CFA member David Chandler sent this photo of the grave marker of W.O.B. Chandler. David was following up on previous research which caused him to conclude that the “O” in W.O.B.’s name stood for “Overton,” a family surname, rather than the generally accepted “Overturn,” which was probably a transcription error. (See CFA Newsletter, Autumn 2008.)
W.O.B. Chandler is buried in Oakhill Cemetery, Stoneburg, Montague County, Texas. In addition to “Chandler” on the base, the inscription reads:
W.O.B. Chandler
Born May 8, 1816
Died Aug. 1, 1896
His happy soul has winged its way
to one pure bright eternal day
