Lorenzo Dow Chandler family - Van Buren County, Tennessee

Above: Dow and Mattie Chandler
The 1930s era photo at left above shows Lorenzo Dow Chandler (known as “Dow”) in the center, his wife Mattie Mae Davis Chandler at right, and their son Arnold Lorenzo Chandler (1909-1998) at left. Also in the group are two unidentified children, presumably family members. The photo was taken at the family farm in Van Buren County, Tennessee; the crop is tobacco.

The photo at right is a tintype of Anna Ellis Chandler, 3rd wife of Little Chandler. Little and Anna are said to have both died of "the fever" that swept through Van Buren County, Tennessee, in 1869. Little and Ann were the parents of Lorenzo Dow Chandler (above), and Little was the son of Jonathan Chandler (born March 17, 1786, in Friedland, Rowan - now Forsyth - County, North Carolina; died 1823, Cape Girardeau, Missouri). Jonathan’s wife and Little’s mother was Elizabeth Elrod. The family believes there is a Cherokee Indian connection in the late 1700s or 1800s. The Chandler lineage of this family is currently unknown beyond Jonathan born 1786.

Laudie, Envie, Perry and Maud Chandler in Ohio

Linda Chandler Channell writes, "I believe this to be a picture of Laudie and Envie, and Perry and Maud Chandler in Beaver, Ohio. I don't have a date, but it looks like maybe late '30's, early 40's." Laudie (1911-1995) and Perry (1918-2007) were the sons of Harry and Dovie Chandler. This family can be found in the 1930 Federal Census of Johnson County, Kentucky. They are members of Genetic Chandler Family #2, descendants of Isaac Chandler, born 1732 in Virginia, died 1797 in Surry County, North Carolina. The Chandler lineage is Isaac 1732-1797 > Thomas 1762-1845 > Henry 1815-1875 > Isaac 1848-1912 > Harry Chandler born 1886 in Kentucky.

Laudie Chandler and Envie Castle married 24 January 1935. Perry N. Chandler married Maud Thompson in 1930 in Beaver, Ohio. As of late 2011, all nine children from this union are living.

Below are pictures Linda took on a 2011 trip to Beaver, Ohio, with her father Charles. The log cabin (at left and center) was at one time owned by Laudie and Envie Chandler. Before Laudie and his family owned the cabin, Linda's grandparents, Perry and Maud Chandler, rented it. Their son Charles (Linda's dad) was born in the right half of the cabin (the bedroom) in 1939, and his cousin Phyllis was also born there. That's Charles standing in the back door of the cabin in the center photo. The photo at right is of a barn that is "across the hollow" from the cabin.

A Chandler Family in Kansas - Descendants of Amasa Chandler
Bev Schindler-Wooley sent some photos of her large Chandler/Arrington family.

Bev's Chandler lineage is John Chandler b 1600 ENG > Robert Chandler b c 1629 > Robert Chandler b 1654 VA > Robert Chandler b 1688 VA > Robert Chandler b 1720 > John Chandler b 1753 VA > Amasa Chandler b 1801 SC > William Richardson Chandler b 1833 IL > Mary Alice Chandler b 1864 IL > Alpha Lee Arrington b 1885 KS > Vera Arlene Arrington > Kermit Schindler > Bev Schindler.

At right above, Alpha Lee Arrington and wife Florence Alma Waters Arrington.

This family had large numbers of children over many generations. According to the CFA Lineages Database (CFALD), Amasa Chandler had 13 children, William Richard Chandler had 14 children, and Mary Alice Chandler Arrington had 13 children. Bev reports that Alpha Lee Arrington and wife Flo had 9 children. and her grandparents Vera Arrington and Ray Schindler had 11 children. Grandmother Vera Arrington Schindler served as the family historian, preserving family Bibles and records. Although Amasa was born in South Carolina, all his children were born in Illinois. Kansas became the family base in later generations. Bev reports, "They were not all born in Kansas or in the same place in Kansas."

Molly Chandler Harrison wrote, "I was excited to see the photos posted by William W. Chandler. I am a descendant of William Henry Chandler and Adelaide Bruce Chandler of Groveport. I recognized many of the relatives, including my Dad, Chub!" Molly sent a photograph (see below) of Dorothy May Chandler, a senior at Pulaski (Virginia) High School, participating in a classroom exercise that appears to be quite fun for the students. Dorothy (see detail at right) is in the exact center of the photo. Molly says Dorothy, Audrey, and Marjorie Chandler were all students at PHS.

Children of Ardell W. "Dell" Chandler
Jon Chandler of Commerce City, Colorado, wrote: "The photo is of my father Verdon A. Chandler and his siblings at the Children's Christian Home (orphanage) in Holdrege, Nebraska, circa 1926 or 1927. They'd come from a fairly well-to-do farm family in Carter, Nebraska, but their father, Ardell W. Chandler, was killed when his car was crushed by a train in 1923 and they lost everything. Mayme, Ardell's wife, learned she was pregnant with her sixth child, Dell, on the day her husband was buried. A couple of years later, Mayme put the children in the orphange while she went to Colorado to find a better life. They were there for six long years. My dad's expression says it all."

Mayme remarried while in Colorado and then sent for her children. They travelled to Longmont, Colorado, where they live as a family once more and all the children finished school.

Verdon, Jon's father, is the only one of the children still living; he turned 95 in March 2011. The boys all served in WWII, and Lee was killed at the Anzio Beachhead at age 21. Dell became a much-decorated soldier, a sniper who helped clear the Allied path to Rome. He fought overwhelming mental demons after the war and died at age 60. The other kids had wonderful lives, according to Jon, and he says, "My dad is my hero." Jon, a musician, song writer and author, blogged about his dad on his website in 2010.

At left is an enlarged detail from the photo above. Front row, from left: Lee, Leila (Peggy) and Dell. Rear: Genevieve, Verdon (Jon's dad), and Malcolm.

Jon's family descends from Elisha Chandler (born 1813 in either Maine or New York) and Emily Kies. They moved to Wisconsin before the Civil War and raised five sons and two daughters. All five of the boys fought for the Union. Jon's great-grandfather, Curtis Chandler, homesteaded at Carter, Nebraska, after serving in the Civil War with the Wisconsin 7th, part of the famed Iron Brigade. He was wounded at Gettysburg and the Battle of the Wilderness. His unit was also at Appomattox. Curtis and his wife Julia Verdon Chandler had two sons, Ardell, killed in the car/train accident in 1923, and Charles.

Descendants of this family gather regularly in Colorado and have a reunion planned for June 2011.

John Gary Chandler family, Person County, North Carolina
John Gary Chandler (1858-1933) of Mt. Tirzah, Person County married Lula Gray Day (1865-1966), and they, along with other family members, are buried at Surl Primitive Baptist Church in Person County. His Chandler lineage is JRR Joell > Joel Chandler > Henderson Chandler born 1789 > David Ruffin Chandler (1829-1862). David Ruffin Chandler was mortally injured at the Battle of Crampton's Gap (Maryland), which is near Harper's Ferry, in September 1862. He was apparently hospitalized in a makeshift hospital there, where he eventually died. He is buried in a Confederate Cemetery in Charles Town, WV. His story as a Confederate soldier is documented in a series of letters held by members of the family.

James L. Chandler Family - Newly Found Photos

This is purportedly a photograph of James L. Chandler, Linda's g-g-grandfather, and his wife.

From Linda: James L Chandler and his wife Oictoria (or maybe Victoria) Hatfield were both from Georgia. They had a son, William David Chandler, born September 9, 1877, Carrolton, Georgia.

This photo is identified as Julia Chandler and possibly William Chandler.

From Linda: William David Chandler, son of James L. and Oictoria/Victoria Hatfield Chandler, was born September 9, 1877, Carrolton, Georgia., and died June 11, 1923, in Barberton Ohio. William David Chandler married Julia Walker, who was born June 13, 1878, in Carrolton, Georgia, and died April 18, 1933, in Barberton Ohio. Their children were Mamie, born 1903 Alabama and died in her 20s in Ohio; James, born 1904 Georgia; Cramer Beuford (Linda's grandfather), born 1907 Alabama; and Nellie, born 1911 Alabama and died at age 16.

At far left is Linda's grandfather, Cramer Beuford Chandler, as a young man. Cramer, much later in life, is shown with his wife, Sophia (nee Opalewski) Chandler, at left.

From Linda: Cramer and Sophia both died in Arizona. Cramer's brother James married Hazel Mess from Akron Ohio, they also died in Arizona. Cramer's sister Nellie died in Georgia.

Mamie Chandler, at left, was the daughter of William David and Julia Chandler. She was born 1903 Alabama and died in her 20s in Ohio. Katherine Kennedy Mastro, shown above in a 1935 photo, is Mamie's daughter.

  12. Oliver Carlton
This family was in Hurricane Creek, Lauderdale County, Mississippi, in 1910. Oliver Carlton, the youngest, was born in 1910, so this photo probably dates from about 1913.

This photo of the six older children of Hezekiah Amos Chandler and Elender Paralee Hollis Chandler was apparently taken on the same day and in the same location as the one immediately above.

There is a State of Texas historical marker in Brownwood, Texas, dedicated to Welcome William Chandler with the wording below. A street in the town is also named for Welcome William Chandler.

Transcription of the wording on Welcome William Chandler's historical marker:

Welcome William Chandler

Credited with being the first permanent settler and first farmer in Brown County, Welcome William Chandler (1813-1870) arrived in 1856 with his wife Sarah, their children and several slaves. Their log cabin was a gathering place for other area pioneers and was the site of the county's original post office and store. Chandler served as Brown County judge from 1858 to 1860 and as postmaster for 7 years, although his daughter Jane in fact ran the post office. About 1868 Chandler moved north of Brownwood to a site which has remained in the family for over 100 years. (1983)

More information about the historical marker can be found at www.9key.com.

Confederate Veterans Gather in 1903 in Springville, Alabama

New member Jon Paul Chandler sent the photo above and a scan of a four page Colonel John W. Inzer Newsletter, a publication of the Sons of Confederate Veterans of Asheville, Alabama, dated March 1987. The newsletter carried a reprint of a newspaper article about this 1903 gathering of Confederate veterans. The local newspaper, The Springville Item, reported in part:

On Monday August 17, 1903, one of the most unique and interesting reunions was held by the "Old Ex-Confederate Soldiers" in the Baptist Church at this place. * * * * At 11 o'clock some sixty of the old veterans, living in, and around Springville, assembled in that church, singing, praying, and reading of the scriptures was engaged in, after which short talks were made by Rev. J. S. E. Robinson, A. W. Woodall, S. W. Henny, J. B. Robertson, J. H. Vandergrift and B. B. Cornelius, after which another old time song, "How Firm A Foundation", and then Maj. Harris spoke at length on "Religion in the Camp". During his talk men were seen weeping all over the church. He spoke feelingly and eloquently. * * * *

Maj. Harris deserves the thanks of all our people for planning this gathering -- it was an object lesson that neither poets, nor painter, nor authors could describe; it simply beggers description. Springville never has, and never will witness such a scene again.

Although the newspaper writeup of the reunion makes no mention of Masons, Jon Paul describes it as a "gathering of Free Masons and Confederate Soldiers of Springville, Alabama made in 1903." Jon Paul says, "I only identified the first person on the right that is seated. He is my great grandfather William L. Chandler, born Jan 1, 1836, born in Greenville, South Carolina and served in the Lousiana Caldwell Guards in 1861 for three months, then in the 42nd Alabama as an ambulance driver (pulled by team of mules) from 1862 until discharged and pardoned in North Carolina April, 1865."

Included in the article was a list of the veterans present, giving their company and regiment. That list is available from Claudia at . The men are listed randomly, the list is longer than the number of men in the photo, and there is no identification that relates names to the photograph.
