George and Emma Chandler Chambers - Person County, North Carolina
The photo at right shows George and Emma Chandler Chambers in the mid-1960s at their home in Timberlake, Person County, North Carolina. Four generations are included in the 1978 photo below: from right, Emma Chandler Chambers, Dorothy Chambers Ellis, and Benjamin Ellis holding his first child.

Emma Chandler Chambers was born December 1899 in Person County, North Carolina, and died August 1, 1983. Her Chandler line is John Chandler b 1600 ENG > Robert Chandler b c 1629 VA > Robert Chandler b 1654 VA > Joell Chandler b 1683 VA > Joel Chandler b 1740 VA > Henderson Chandler b 1789 VA > David Ruffin Chandler b 1829 NC > John Gary Chandler b 1857 NC.

Note: Emma Chandler Chambers is a member of the John Gary Chandler family featured in the John Gary Chandler family below.

John Gary Chandler family, Person County, North Carolina
John Gary Chandler (1858-1933) of Mt. Tirzah, Person County married Lula Gray Day (1865-1956), and they, along with other family members, are buried at Surl Primitive Baptist Church in Person County. His Chandler lineage is John Chandler b 1600 ENG > Robert Chandler b c 1629 VA > Robert Chandler b 1654 VA > Joell Chandler b 1683 VA > Joel Chandler b 1740 VA > Henderson Chandler b 1789 VA > David Ruffin Chandler b 1829 NC > John Gary Chandler b 1857 NC. David Ruffin Chandler was mortally injured at the Battle of Crampton's Gap (Maryland), which is near Harper's Ferry, in September 1862. He was apparently hospitalized in a makeshift hospital there, where he eventually died. He is buried in a Confederate Cemetery in Charles Town, WV. His story as a Confederate soldier is documented in a series of letters held by members of the family.

Stephen Albert and Henrietta Holman Chandler of North Carolina
Joan Chandler Knowles sent this photograph of her great-grandparents, Stephen Albert and Henrietta Chandler. Stephen Albert Chandler was a member of Chandler DNA Group 7A. Chandler lineage: John Chandler b 1600 ENG > Robert Chandler b c 1629 VA > Robert Chandler b 1654 VA > Joseph Chandler b 1695 VA > Joseph Chandler b 1739 VA > Stephen Chandler b 1781 NC > Stephen Ingram Chandler b 1809 NC > Stephen Albert Chandler b 1846 NC.

Stephen Albert Chandler was born September 30, 1846, in Person County, North Carolina, and died September 1, 1910, in High Point, North Carolina. His wife, Florence Henrietta Holman was born February 7, 1853, in Richmond, Virginia, and died August 21, 1902, in High Point, North Carolina. They were married September 25, 1873, and had six children: Lillie May, Florence Etta, Albert Bayard, Charles Henry (Joan's grandfather), John Walter, and Edwin. Charles Henry Chandler's son Ralph Steven Chandler (1911-2003) was Joan's father.

This photo is in the collection of Lorene Chandler Hartline, age 104, of Fayetteville, North Carolina. She is a first cousin to Joan's father, Ralph Steven Chandler.
