The Chandler Family Association Genealogy Panel – 2011 Annual Report

The CFA Genealogy Panel considered 143 cases in 2011. Some cases were handled without submission to the panelists if a CFALD report could be provided or questions answered by Dick Chandler, GP Chairman, or Claudia Brocato, Secretary. “New” in member column indicates the inquirer joined the CFA about the same time their query was submitted to the GP or as a result of the GP’s efforts. CFALD refers to the CFA Lineages Database. DNA Group Number in bold indicates an actual DNA testee or close relative of testee. DNA Group Number with a question mark (?) indicates a supposition of genetic group. We have disguised the names of the inquirers and other living persons mentioned below to protect their privacy.

Any conclusions presented here should not be considered the final product of our research. Genealogy is a process and research will always be ongoing. If you would like to know more about any of these cases, please contact

Visit the Chandler Family Association website at ChandlerFamilyAssociation.org for information about the Genealogy Panel, the Chandler DNA Project, the Genetic Chandler Families, and more. For information on the almost 60 (so far) genetically-distinct Chandler lines visit ChandlerFamilyAssociation.org/genetic_chandler_families.html.

Some lineages below are abbreviated: JRR is a short version of John b. 1600 > Robert > Robert. The various lines of descent from John Chandler born 1600 can be viewed here: ChandlerFamilyAssociation.org/members_group7a.html.

Dick: “This Abraham or Abram Chandler does not appear in the CFA Lineages Database or any of the major New England lines. He is likely the Abram Chandler who married Martha Hubbard in 1843 per "Illinois Marriages 1790-1860" at Ancestry.” He then supplied an extensive analysis from census records of what is apparently this family in VT, NY, IL, OH, and NY.

Albert Yancy Chandler (ABT 1858 - 1 Nov. 1929) married Ida R. (Rebecca?) Chandler (ABT 1863 - ABT 1890.)” Inquirer provided a lot of information about this couple – a Chandler who married a Chandler – and the family.

Barry supplied numerous census and burial records and information about Allen’s children. SC research is complicated because of lost records, and numerous distantly related Chandler families settled in the area pre-Revolutionary War. Suggestions made for future research. Unable to be sure of Allen’s ancestry. Research continues.

Archibald H. (possibly Henry) Chandler, 2nd Lt., was KIA June 10, 1944 when the P-47 Thunderbolt he was piloting was shot down by flak in Normandy. Benjamin Chandler born 1789 – Inquirer believes her Chandler line descends from George and Jane Chandler, specifically Benjamin Chandler born 1789 married to Mary Luce born Feb 19, 1875, married Nov. 24, 1812 in Sussex New Jersey. Children: Abraham, Lucy Catherine, William A., Martha M. and Hannah E.

1789 Benjamin was searched for in the descendants of George & Jane, of William and Annis, and of Edmund of Duxbury - the three most likely ancestors - and none of them contain a Benjamin of suitable age. Responded: “If Whitfield married Sarah Neal, he must have been remarried by 1850 since he (aged 60 and surnamed Chanler) is with Lucinda aged 53 born VA in the 1850 Census of Hendricks, Shelby County, IN. In the 1860 Census he is aged 78 and has Mary Chandler aged 65 with him at Sugar Creek, Shelby Co - she was born at Monongahela which I think is now in WV. In the 1860 Census schedule an "e" has been deliberately inserted in his name, making it Whitefield.” . . . . “The family seems to have remained in PA until about 1845.  Suggested DNA test.

Jesse T. Chandler – My father is Richard Wayne Chandler (b 1952 in Oxford, NC) and my grandfather was Marion Thomas Chandler (b Dec 5th 1891 d July 6th 1963). My great grandfather was Alfred Yancey Chandler (b. Dec 28th 1850 [birth year is likely incorrect] and d. Jan 15th 1912). It appears Alfred Chandler's father was Jesse T. Chandler (b 1831 d 1863) and mother Lucinda (married 1852 - Person County NC). I made the Alfred to Jesse connection because Jesse died in the Civil War and Alfred lived on/near the Yarborough farm with Lucinda Yarborough Chandler at that time widowed living on the farm with her father. I think Jesse's father was a Henderson Chandler (b 1789 d 1870) and Henderson's father Joel Chandler (b 1740 d 1800) (Joel's wife was Jean Hay).

Both John and Mary's father Peter, grandfather Henry and Gt Grandfather Henry were Mayors of Guildford in Surrey, England. Inquirer has performed extensive research on this prestigious line and seeks help with origins, US connections, and reasons for grant of Arms.

After a discussion of Coats of Arms, Dick replied: “Unfortunately the name John was given extensively among Chandler families, so it will be very difficult to identify his ancestry. In cases like this we have found that Y chromosome DNA testing can provide a breakthrough, sometimes immediately and in other cases some time later when another participant joins in. I wonder if you could persuade a living male Chandler with an unbroken male line to participate in the Chandler project?”

John Hasset Chandler – Inquirer is seeking information about ‘John Hasset Chandler’ who was a missionary in Siam in 1800s. Synopsis of Dick’s response: I am sure you know that John Hasset Chandler was a descendant of William and Annis Chandler who migrated from Hertfordshire in England to the New World in the 1600s. Although we can't help you with an immediate answer, I am sure we can help you with your research. . . . . Joseph Chandler (1769-1853) is shown with wife, Sarah Farmer, marriage date 1794 in North Carolina. They are shown with eight children being born between 1795 and 1811. He moved to from North Carolina to Franklin Ga. However, I have also found that he had two children, Simeon, born in 1785, and Ezekiel, born in 1791, both by a Nancy Wiley. I can't find they were ever married. Do you have any info on this? Also, her is my wife's line that is shown on Ancestry:Simeon !785-1850, married to Amelia? He is shown in the 1850 census as living in Buncombe Co., N.C. John J Chandler 1820-?? married to Fannie Long in Lincoln County, N.C. on 7/17/1838. Place of death unknown. Carlotta "Lottie" Chandler, 8/22/1841, Lincoln Co, NC, married WIlliam W. McCourry, died 12/91925, Yancy Co., NC. Lottie was my wife's great grandmother. Is this line from Simeon to Lottie correct according to your records?

DoH

CFALD has exactly what you have for Joseph Chandler 1769-1853 and Sarah Farmer. His line of descent from John Chandler born England in 1600 is John > Robert > Robert > Joseph 1695-1764. However, the father of Simeon and Ezekiel is a different Joseph born 1755, spouse unknown, son of Elisha. This Elisha was originally shown as the son of Joseph 1695-1764, but researchers of that line assure me that there is no evidence of Joseph having a son named Elisha, so his parentage is currently unknown. Simeon and Ezekiel were two of Joseph's five children. Simeon did indeed have a son named John, but he was born in Buncombe County NC in 1822 and did not marry Fannie Long or have a daughter named Carlotta, "Lottie" or anything similar. According to the marriage records at Ancestry, the Chandler who married Nancy Wiley on 23 March 1801 was Josiah, not Joseph.

I have looked at the trees at Ancestry which show Simeon and Amelia. The Chandler tree says that Joseph married Nancy Wiley on 23 March 1801, i.e. AFTER he married Sarah Farmer, and that he had no children with Amelia. None of the tree provide any evidence that Simeon's parents were Joseph and Sarah (Farmer) Chandler, other than other similarly unsourced Ancestry trees. Bluntly, these trees are leading you badly astray. In circumstances like this, it is vital to start with what you can be sure of, and work back from there. I assume you are sure about Carlotta. I guess that she is the Lottey M aged 10 who appears in the 1850 Census of Cleveland Co, NC with parents John, a Millwright aged 36, and Francis aged 30 [may be Fanny Long but not necessarily so], with siblings Mary J (8), Newton V (6) and Laban S (six months), everyone born in NC. In the 1860 Census of the same place, John is not present, Francis is 40, the others are as you would expect, and are joined by Francis C (female aged 6) and John F (4). This could suggest that John died about 1856.

So, the person you should be looking for is a John Chandler (not necessarily John J) born about 1814 (not 1820). I have checked CFALD and can find no suitable John Chandler born between 1812 and 1816. At present, I would have to answer "don't know" to the question about this John's parentage.

Joseph Edward Chandler, AKA Edward Chandler. Family records indicate he was born Feb 9, 1876 at Spring Creek (Shelby County?) AL. In 1900, he appears with the family of John S & Bettie Hames, Morgan County, AL, and is listed as brother in law (single, age 22). He married Sarah "Addie" Johnson April 26, 1903 in New Decatur, Morgan County, AL. He and Addie can be found in Morgan County in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 US Census. A son, Lonnie V, was born July 20, 1904.

A thorough perusal of Montgomery County records did not help identify Kendrick’s father. Two members of the panel spent a great deal of time on this case. The panelists considered several possible fathers for Kendrick/Kindrick. One possibility is Richard Wilkins Chandler born 1791 in ?VA died 1868 (JRR William > William > Daniel bn 1768 Halifax Co, VA). Another Wilkins is in the 1850 Census of District 14, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, as a farmer aged 60 born NC. A study of Montgomery County, NC, records revealed that the very first Chandler deed in the county was a purchase of land by Kindrick in 1841. The panel members found records of Kendrick’s descendants but were unable to come to a conclusion on his ancestry. Research is continuing in contiguous counties. One panelist considered a Timothy Chandler born 1766-1784 who was in Montgomery County in 1810 as a possible parent or relative to Kendrick. Timothy lived near the apparent father of Kendrick’s future wife.

The death of Francis Chandler on 5 September 1994 occurred at 34601 Brooksville, Hernando Co, Florida.  He was born on 6 July 1915 and his SSN 385-05-1264 was issued in Michigan before 1951.  This ties in with what you told us.

I have had less success with finding him in the censuses.  I think this is him in the 1920 Census - Francis Chandler aged 16 born Michigan as were his parents.  He has no recorded occupation and is living as a lodger along with another lodger Robert Porter aged 14, in the Grand Rapids, Kent Co, Michigan home of widow Emma Jones aged 70 born Kentucky and her divorced daughters Winifred Jones (43) a beautician and Edna de Lyons (44) a masseuse.  My guess is that Robert Porter is Winifred's son (the 1920 census suggests that).  So Francis Chandler might be a relative too, but I simply can't find him in the 1920 census.  For the record, there is a Frances T Chandler shown as female aged 6 born Michigan in the 1920 census of Decatur, Van Buren Co, Michigan.  The child is shown as the granddaughter of George (57) and Laura (55) Mahoney born Michigan and Kentucky respectively. I mention this because of the Kentucky connection [Emma Jones and Laura Mahoney of similar age] though for this to have any relevance the census record of Frances' sex would have to have been incorrect.

I don't see any evidence that Francis or Frank was born in Florida, though his "going back to Florida" might suggest that.

It developed that this inquirer had provided information to Jim Reeves years ago. Reports from CFALD were sent to her and further collaboration was encouraged. Lineage: JRR Joseph > John > John > Zachariah > William.

William Chandler born 1790 –possibly married to Elizabeth, had sons Robert born 1811 and Joseph born 1812. Came to McNairy County, TN. William left NC between 1820-1830. He had 16 kids. Robert had 20!

Not able to find these people in CFALD. Sent inquirer a summary of her query, to be approved by her before submission to the Genealogy Panel. Finally rec’d approval in late November, but summary was accidentally not sent to Dick until late December. Apologized, assured her we would get back to her when Genealogy Panel has information.

William Chandler was my great-great-grand- father. His siblings were James (line of Capt. Joshua L.) and George (the brother who "went west" to Ohio/Indiana) and possibly others. Any information on Chandlers in Delmarva (Delaware, Maryland and Virginia Eastern Shores)?

Correspondence with Dick resulted in a 35/37 DNA match made between inquirer’s cousin and another testee who was previously designated as Group 22. They have been put in touch, and correspondence and research are ongoing. Dick also forwarded relevant queries from genforum.

William Chandler, DNA Group 9 – As I perused your website, I saw the list of genetic Chandler families. I have my line traced back to genetic family #9, William Chandler, born 1595 in Hertfordshire, England, and died in 1641 in Roxbury, MA. I would appreciate any information you might have farther back than this William.

Dick responded, in part:With regard to the ancestors of William 1595-1641, there are two competing lineages in circulation. The one I subscribe to is supported by entries in the original IGI as at February 1981 i.e. before the IGI was corrupted by unsubstantiated ‘member submissions’. It runs: William 1595-1641 > Henry 1560-1618 > Thomas 1528-1611 > Thomas 1500-1554 > Thomas 1468-1551. All births at Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire (please note spelling and punctuation). William Clarke Chandler born 1793 was found in CFALD. Inquirer is a John Chandler b 1600 descendant if all information is correct. Lineage: JRR Joseph > John Chandler b 1726 > Joseph Chandler b 1755 > William Clark Chandler b 1793

Claudia responded that William Marshall Chandler is not in CFALD. A William Chandler was found in the 1900 census for Beat 2, Carthage, Leake County, MS, who had a son of the correct age named Marshall. Inquirer confirmed that his father was born in Marshall County. Another panelist (Madonna) hopes to spend some time following up on this.

William Pless Chandler born White County, GA was in Pickens, SC before 1895 and is in all later censuses. My DNA is group 26 with my brother. The only other group 26 Chandler member is black. Other Y-DNA matches are Canada /Kennedy descendants

William Riley Chandler born 1813-1814 in Franklin Co., GA.  Problem is I find WRC in both Perry Co., AL and Wilcox Co, AL on the 1850 Census. Married to Mary A. Filbert in Perry Co and Elizabeth Ann Commander in Wilcox Co.  AL.  Believe him to be a son of Zachariah and Sarah Echols Chandler from Franklin Co., GA.  He was apparently married to both women at the same time (one in Perry Co., AL and the other in Wilcox Co., AL) with brothers living with or near both.

Unable to validate inquirer’s starting point - that William Riley Chandler can be found in both Perry Co and Wilcox Co, AL in the 1850 Census.  We can only see the one in Wilcox Co, married to Elizabeth with children Mary, Martha, Elizabeth, George and Francis.

Also, our records show that the William born 1814 in Franklin Co, GA son of Zachariah Chandler and Sarah Echols was not William R but William H who married first Mary Philbert in 1836, then Sarah Catherine McCain in GA in 1841, then Sarah Melissa Primm in AL in 1847. Advisd inquirer to re-examine her research.
