Annie L. Chandler - Teresa Whelan would like more information on her great-grandmother, Annie L. Chandler. According to "Augusta County, Virginia, Births (1862-75)," Annie was born November 13, 1870, and her parents were William and Elizabeth. Teresa says there were a number of William Chandlers living in the same area of Augusta County, near Staunton, and she is not sure which William was Annie's father. Annie married James Robert Tinsley and continued to live in Augusta County until her death in 1941. Please contact Teresa if you can provide additional information on Annie's parents and beyond.

Chandlers in Missouri and Indiana - Greg Nutt is researching his mother's Chandler family line. Greg's mother, Viola Chandler Nutt, was born in Cedar County, Missouri, in 1916. Viola's father was Thomas Jefferson Chandler, born Cedar County, Missouri, in 1872, and her grandfather was Shadrach Chandler, born in Brown County, Indiana, in 1821. Greg's research currently points to Shadrach's father being possibly Benjamin Chandler in Monroe County, Indiana. This Benjamin Chandler is probably the son of Shadrack Chandler and Anne Brummett married 8 Oct 1789 in Franklin County, Virginia. Anne and Shadrack migrated from Franklin County, Virginia, to Knox County, Kentucky. Anne later migrated (without Shadrack to) to Monroe County, Indiana, with her sons. Greg suspects that the father of this Shadrack Chandler is one Benjamin Chandler who married Jane Fallis in Franklin County, Virginia. James Brummett (father or brother of Anne) provide the surety for the marriage. Greg hopes there is some "kind member of CFA who has knowledge of this line" and can help him.

George W. Chandler, "parents unknown" - CFA member Helen Frederick has had no luck tracing the ancestry of her great-grandfather, George W. Chandler. George was born about 1821 in New York. He died September 4, 1895, and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Three Rivers, Michigan. He married Fannie Birch, born about 1827 in New York, and they had the following children:
  • Margaret J. - born about 1846 in South Bristal, New York; resided in Jackson, Michigan; died December 8, 1883; buried in Riverside Cemetery, Three Rivers, Michigan
  • Marietta - born about 1847, buried Three Rivers Cemetery
  • Francis (or Frances)
  • Charles - born 1853

  • Helen's notes from census records show George in South Bristol, New York, in 1840; Naples, Ontario County, New York, in 1850; Lockport, St. Joseph County, Michigan in 1860; and Jackson, Michigan (716 Francis Street) in 1870. His death certificate reads "parents unknown" and shows a different death date, October 22, 1895. Place of death was Kalamazoo, Michigan. If you can shed any light on the ancestry of George W. Chandler, please contact Helen.

Sarah J. Chandler (or Chandeler) Collins - Kathy Lamm is looking for information on her 3rd great grandmother, Sarah J. Chandler (or Chandeler). Sarah was married to John Collins in Morgan County, Indiana, in 1857. The 1860 Jefferson Township, Morgan County, Indiana, census has her listed with husband John, daughter Permelia J. and a 16 year old Nancy Collins. According to the census Sarah was born about 1839 in Indiana. No further record of Sarah C. Collins has been found; perhaps she remarried after the death of John Collins. Her daughter Permelia Jane married Loch Clinton about 1879, possibly in Missouri. Any help would be appreciated.

John Chandler born South Carolina -- Distant cousins Judy Brasfield and Merrie Morrison are searching for information on John Chandler, born about 1803-05 in South Carolina. John and was the father of Willis Hiram Chandler (born December 29, 1829, in Tennessee) and grandfather of Noah Chandler of Tallent, Oregon. Judy and Merrie are two of a group of researchers who believe this John is the son of William Chandler and Polly Bates, originally of South Carolina, who were in Hickman County, Tennessee, by 1810-1815. John and his young family left Tennessee when his son Willis Hiram was just a baby. They were in Washington County, Missouri, in 1830, and then moved on to Crawford County, Missouri. William and Mary Bates Chandler of Hickman County, Tennessee, had a son John born ca. 1806. No records of marriage, death, etc., can be found in Tennessee except that he is frequently mentioned up into the 1860's as a living heir of William Chandler in the numerous transactions of buying and selling property between his brother Benjamin and other heirs. Many surnames from Hickman County, Tennessee, are also in Crawford County, Missouri. Members of the Bates family married two of John Chandler's children. Another clue is that John Chandler's children have the same names as William Chandler's children. A professional genealogist hired by a cousin said John Chandler was the "black sheep of the family." Can you help these cousins prove that William & Mary's son John is in fact the John Chandler who moved to Missouri in time for the 1830 census?

Missing Bible Update - CFA member Merrie Morrison posted a query on April 21, 2008, searching for an 1874 Family Bible, originally the property of Noah Chandler of Oregon. The Bible was thought to have been given to the CFA by Don Orr in 2002 with the hope that it could be returned to the family. During our September 2008 annual meeting in Chattanooga, the Bible was located among the collection of books and research materials that our retiring librarian, Jim Reeves, has gathered over the years. Jim has faithfully displayed the Bible at every annual meeting and asked numerous people for clues to the family. Don Orr, no relation to any Chandlers, rescued the Bible from an antique shop in the state of Washington. Thanks to his kind intentions and Merrie's query, the Bible is now back in the hands of a member of the family. See the John Chandler query above for more on Noah Chandler's family, and a new query posted by Merrie and her distant cousin Judy Brasfield. View a transcription of the handwritten records in the Noah Chandler Bible in pdf format.

Searching for Pernecy Chandler -- Cyndi Bennett says family information gives her ancestor's name as Pernecy Chandler (25 Aug 1813 - 4 Mar 1890, Morgan Co. IN). Several factors seem to connect her to the Joseph Chandler / Anna Jessup line, but Quaker records do not list her as a daughter. Her birthdate, however, is identical to that of their daughter Lucy. Sarah Chandler, 77, is living with Pernecy in 1870, and this might be Joseph Chandler's second wife, Sarah Ritter. In addition, Pernecy's first husband was apparently a Ritter, as she is listed in 1850 with her second husband, Isaac Brown, and three Ritter children. She is also listed as Pernecy Ritter on that marriage record. Isaac Brown apparently adopted (formally or informally) her children, who appear with the Brown surname on subsequent census records. Pernecy's birthplace is listed as North Carolina in 1850 and 1870 and as Indiana on 1860 and 1880 censuses. No record of her first marriage has been located. Any information or ideas would be greatly welcomed.

Descendants of Joel Chandler -- Sonja Hoffman needs information on the descendants of Thomas Chandler and Tabitha Chandler, children of Joel Chandler and Jane Hay. Thomas' daughter Martha married John P. Wilkerson in Person County, North Carolina. In the 1850 census Thomas was in the household of Martha and John in Person County. The Wilkersons, Sonja's g-g-grand parents, both died in Hunt County, Texas. Sonja's late husband was a descendant of Tabitha Chandler, who married Robert Neal. Their son Stephen Howell Neal married Laura Wesson Malone. Julian Tabitha Neal, daughter of Stephen Howell Neal and Laura Wesson Malone, lived in Wood County, Texas. Her sister who married B. J. Attaway and another sister who married a McKoy also lived in the same area. Sonja has some information on the Tabitha line but failed to document the sources before her informant died. Any help would be appreciated.

Who were Strother Chandler's parents? -- Marsha Chandler hopes to take her Chandler line beyond her ggg-grandfather, Strother Chandler. Strother was born July 21, 1835, and died April 23, 1901, in Middle River District, Augusta County, Virginia. A Chandler-Randolph Mystery - Melinda Massey is doing genealogy research for an uncle, Robert Randolph "Randy" Walker. Randy's mother, Ruth Almedia (Almeta) Randolph (b. 9/4/1927 Poinsett County, Arkansas, d. 8/26/1965 Alabama?), is a granddaughter of Robert M. "Bob" Chandler (b. 1858 Georgia, d. 1906 Tyronza, Poinsett County, Arkansas) and Marion Lillian Gray (b. 1860 Georgia, d. 1943 Arkansas). Ruth may be the daughter of one of Bob and Lillian's younger daughters, Ada B. or Isabel. Family members still alive in Arkansas are reluctant to discuss Ruth's parentage. Siblings of Ada and Isabel included:
  • Leander G., born 6/1884 Georgia
  • William N., born 9/1886 Alabama
  • James Robert, born 5/1889 Alabama
  • Marthie M., born 1/1891 Alabama
  • Leanora L. "Nora," born 8/1893 Arkansas?
  • Paul W., born 10/1895 Arkansas
  • Roy Lafayette, born 11/11/1897 Arkansas, died 11/9/1933 Memphis, Tennessee
  • Randy's mother Ruth married Thomas Frank Walker (b. 6/27/1920?, died 8/14/1979 Alabama?), and they had two sons. Randy would like to have an answer to the mysteries in his family. Was his grandmother Ada B. Chandler or possibly her sister Isabel? Who was the unknown Randolph male, his grandfather? If you have any information, please contact Melinda.

Chandlers from Cumberland County, Kentucky, were early settlers in Texas -- Donald George is researching the families of father and son Thomas and John Chandler, listed in the 1810 and 1820 censuses in Cumberland County, Kentucky. Donald believes Thomas died before the 1820 census and that Charity Chandler shown on that census is his widow. Thomas Chandler received land in 1800 on Marrowbone Creek and his sons John and Benjamin received land there later. Thomas, believed to be from the Carolinas, was 45+ on the 1810 Census.

John Chandler was 16-26 on the 1810 Census and married with one child in Burksville, Kentucky. The 1820 census lists Charity, John, and Benjamin Chandler all as Heads of Household. When John Chandler died in 1823, his wife Winnifred Litteral Chandler was made guardian of their five minor children: Mary "Polly" Chandler, Cinthia (Cynthia) Chandler, Betsey Chandler, Thomas Chandler, and Elzey Chandler. Two Litteral families appear as neighbors on the 1810 census.

John's children: Mary "Polly" Chandler married Josiah Thomas 10 August 1824 in Lawrence County, Indiana. Census records show Josiah was born c. 1805 and Polly c. 1809, both in Kentucky. Their Entry Permit into Mexico (now Texas) in 1835 was signed by Stephen C. George who was also their neighbor there. Cinthia Chandler was born c. 1812 in Kentucky and married John Battle Mayfield 19 Feb 1829 in Lawrence County, Indiana. They also moved to Texas and were neighbors to Stephen C George. Thomas Chandler left Cherokee County, Texas, for the Gold Rush in California and died there, according to 1853 Probate Records. His heirs for the Texas property were Polly Chandler Thomas, John Battle Mayfield (Cinthia had died in 1852), and Betsey Chandler, who was still in Kentucky.

George connections: According to the 1850 Cherokee County, Texas, census, William George was born around 1784 in Virginia and his wife, Delilah, was born about 1788 in South Carolina. Marriage records show William George married Delilah Chandler 08 Jan 1811 in Hamilton County, Ohio. Of their known children most were born in Indiana 1811-1829. This family is not listed on the 1820 census in Indiana, but they are shown on the 1830 census in Clark County Illinois. Their Entry Permit into Mexico was 1832. William George died 06 Feb 1851 in Cherokee County, Texas. The heirs who sold his land were Delilah George (b. 1788). Stephen C. George (b. 1813), William E. George (b. 1817), John W. George (b. 1823), Hiram Walker, John Chisum, Elijah Chisum and Josiah Thomas. Judah George (b. 1811) married Hiram Walker. Mary Elizabeth "Polly" George (b. 1815) married John M. Chisum. Delilah George (b. 1820) married Elijah Chisum. Josiah Thomas married Mary "Polly" Chandler. Delilah Chandler George died about 1872 in Limestone County, Texas. Donald believes the female age 16-26 in the Thomas Chandler household on the 1810 census could be Delilah and the female age 0-10 in the John Chandler household is Polly Chandler. He believes Josiah Thomas may be Delilah's son from a previous marriage. If you can shed any light on the Chandler/George family, please contact Donald.

Chandler, Rose, and Corder Families in Tennessee -- In pursuit of his Chandler ancestors, Ben Williamson is trying to identify all Chandlers in the 1830 census. He is currently working on several Tennessee families that seem to be connected geographically and by marriage. Siblings William Chandler and Parthena Chandler are possibly the chldren of an Isaac Chandler, who was possibly the son of Robert Chandler and Parthena Bailey, b: 1777. Parthena Chandler B: 1799 South Carolina married William Rose B: 1790-1794 D: 8-29-1834 Smith County, Tennessee. William Chandler B: 1802 South Carolina M: Elizabeth (Bennett?) B: 1800 North Carolina (family in 1850 Smith County Tennessee Census). There is only one Chandler family and one Rose family in Smith County, Tennessee, in the 1820 census.

Parthena Chandler B: 1799 South Carolina Married William Rose B: 1790-1794 D: 8-29-1834 Smith County Tennessee
    Children:
    • Eliza Ann Rose B: 1817 Smith County Tennessee
    • George Washington Rose B: 4-10-1819 D: 3-23-1909 Smith County Tennessee M: 1-23-1839 Wilson County Tennessee to Mary E. Corder B: 1-30-1820 Tennessee
    • Sally Rose B: 1821 Smith County Tennessee
    • William Jackson Rose B: 2-2-1823 Smith County Tennessee
    • Dr. Ezekiel Timothy Rose 7-7-1825 Smith County Tennessee
    • Pleasant Hill Rose B: abt 1828 Smith County Tennessee
    • John W. Rose B: 8-25-1832 Smith County Tennessee
    • Nancy E. Rose B: 4-23-1839 Smith County Tennessee
William Chandler B: 1802 South Carolina M: Elizabeth (Bennett?) B: 1800 North Carolina (family in 1850 Smith County Tennessee Census)
    Children:
    • Stokeley Chandler B: abt 1827 Tennessee M: 10-5-1852 Wilson County Tennessee to Nancy Corder B: 9-16-1825 Tennessee
    • Elizabeth Chandler B: abt 1829 Tennessee
    • Parthena Chandler B: abt 1831 Tennessee
    • John B: abt 1834 Tennessee
    • Louisa B: abt 1836 Tennessee
    • William B: abt 1838 Tennessee
    • Lemuel B: abt 1843 Tennessee

Ben believes that the Chandler and Rose families were closely intertwined. Mary E. and Nancy Corder (who he believes were sisters and the daughters of an Azaiah Corder and Sarah Levina Shaw) married George Washington Rose and Stokeley Chandler, respectively. In Ben's scenario, George Washington Rose and Stokeley Chandler are first cousins. Ben so far has no concrete proof of any of these supposed connections. If anyone has information that would help prove his theory either right or wrong, please contact Ben.

He was born in Halifax, Co., Virginia, on October 15, 1815, and married Martha Ann Griffin Hendren of Norfolk, Va., on Jan. 1, 1839. They had 6 children, three of whom survived to adulthood: Mary E.B. Chandler, Emma Virginia Chandler Llewellyn, and Texanna Chandler Schilling. There was a son, Frederick H.H. who died as a child in 1858, and two other children, unknown names/genders. Rev. Chandler died in Newark, Ohio, in 1892, and the documentation from the cemetery lists his parents' names as Frederick and Isabell. The census of 1860 lists a Joel Chandler, born about 1807, living with Rev. H.J. Chandler and his family in Princess Anne, Virginia, but there's no indication of the nature of their relationship, only that Joel was "insane."
